Maybe you’re like me, a relatively stressed out college educated boomer professional (remember when we were called yuppie scum?) trying to figure out how to run a business, a marriage, a family and a life in our exciting new world of tech connectivity, increased expectations, and reduced property values.
Scarffing down a quick bite of lunch between stacked meetings the other day, I realized that more than anything else my current life requires three things:
Elvis Costello’s Peace, Love and Understanding? Hardly.
Warren Zevon’s Lawyers, Guns and Money? No to at least two out of three.
Cher’s Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves? C’mon, it wasn’t even a good song.
No, the three things I find myself looking for as I race through airports and juggle meetings are outlets, WiFi, and bathrooms.
Seems like the devices I need to run my business, my life and this blog always need to be recharged and there’s never a free outlet around when you need one. Staying in touch with my family, friends, clients and employees requires constant bandwidth and I can suck up as much computer capacity as I can find. Most pressing, my 50 plus body cries out for frequent bio breaks. So often, in fact, that I’m thinking of running my next marathon for Team Flomax just to wear the shirt, “Have tree, will pee.”
Mundane as it might sound, I’m not wandering in the wilderness looking for an honest man, the Holy Grail or the meaning of life. If you want to make me smile, just lead me to outlets, WiFi and bathrooms. They may not be the best hooks for a rock song but they’re the three things I look for every day.

I would add:
HDTV… since our eyesight is going.
Great bedding… since our bodies are falling apart.
Longer arms: Since I can’t read my Blackberry without taking off my glasses.
Your blogs keep getting better and better! When you get the Flomax tee shirts pit one aside for me!

If you are “needy” in Pinecrest,I can provide two out of the three…
A fourth to consider-how many connectors, headphones and chargers do you travel with. My guess is there are at least a dozen in my briefcase.
Gates and Jobs where on stage and taking questions, when a member of the audience was allowed to approach them with his visual question. he dumped an entire box of connector, headphones and chargers for Microsoft and Apple on the stage. He simply said who is going to fix this? The entire audience gave the guy a standing “O”, while gates and Jobs just smiled.
that leaves zevon my favorite …..singing only about money
i love the sound of that
i also love your blog
Brilliant, Bruce. I like how you think and your humor is both funny and TOO real!
Simple desires when you have your health. Not sure about the wealth. Fun reading.
Bruce, love the new delivery mechanism for the blog! Sitting on a plane at ATL I’m with your 3 Things. Except….At what point do we decide to buy that wireless card, so that we can have access all the time? And when is the right time to invest in spare batteries and eschew the 3-prong dilemma? And when do we make the move to adult diapers, so that we can finally and totally be free??
(Or is that all just a silly dream?)
I love your post. It’s a pleasure to hear somebody talk and saying something relevant. The small joys of life. Who knew? Turkel Talks…a must read.
When do we buy the wireless card? Got it. But 3G still isn’t as fast as WiFi.
When do we start schlepping spare batteries? Too heavy and REALLY bad for the environment.
When do we start wearing adult diapers? Depends.
Folks — what Baby Boomers want hasn’t changed in the last 40 years. It’s Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Viagra and an iPod should do it.
Amen! Just returned from a trip and agree with you wholeheartedly.
