Interesting observation. I can tell you that over the years I have been frustrated by the standard industry classification (SIC) codes by which all businesses are categorized. It hampers research because most revenue flows from a customer interaction through a complicated network of businesses from different SIC codes. It's a pervasive system that carries over to other publications that we rely upon including the Yellow Pages.

The claims of those Gulf Coast businesses affected by the oil spill are not dissimilar to the complaints of businesses in Detroit and the industrial Midwest. When a big industry is affected, all its feeders are affected. It will be interesting to see how Ken Feinberg draws the line.
